This week we are introducing Nigel, our wonderful Strengthening Families Coordinator. Nigel has many years of social work experience and has been running Strengthening Families for the past year and a half. Nigel has a strength for facilitation and leading meetings. He is passionate about supporting people to reach their own goals and ensuring their voices are heard.
Nigel is also our resident handyman, he is very talented at creating, building and fixing things.
Here are some thoughts from Nigel:
What do you love most about the Strengthening Families process?
I love being able to work alongside families to support them in achieving their goals that they set for their family. Bring all the services to the table and building an action plan that is focused on the goals of the family, not the services. I feel this really empowers families to take the control back and had a sense of achievement when the reach what it is they are trying to achieve.
What do you find challenging?
The lack of services available in what is referred to as counties east Manukau. This speaks to the area from Flat Bush to the Panmure Bridge, out to Beachlands and Maraetai. It is really hard to get the right services on board for a family, when there are limited services to access that support this area. It is my hope that one day we can have the right services supporting our community so that we can meet the needs of the families we work with.
If you could give one piece of advice to people who are overwhelmed by the system, what would it be?
Remember, that you are the professional in your family. If you feel that your voice is not being heard, or you feel that you are going around in circles, there is hope. Strengthening Families can help bring the focus back on you and your family, you just have to ask for it.
